Bio
Dr Richard Arvey is an Adjunct Professor at Department of Management and Organisation, National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School. He is also the Director of Centre for Strategic Leadership (CSL) at the School and a Fellow of the Division of Industrial/Organisational Psychology and American Psychological Association.
Prior to joining NUS Business School, he was a Professor at the University of Minnesota and a Visiting Exchange Scholar at the University of Lyon in France and Keio University in Japan. He has also been a Visiting Professor at University of California in Berkeley and Assistant Professor at University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee. He also taught at the University of Houston.
Dr Arvey has been active as an industrial/organisational psychologist for over 30 years. His areas of interest and research include the selection and placement of employees, employment interview and testing, discrimination and bias in selection and employment, job analysis, performance appraisals, motivation and job satisfaction, work redesign, training and development, and more recently, leadership.
Over the years, Dr Arvey has had more than 100 articles, chapters, or technical reports published, including his book titled, "Fairness in Selecting Employees," which was published in 1979, and revised in 1988.
He was recognised as one of the top 10 most published authors by the Journal of Applied Psychology and Personnel Psychology during the 1980s and 1990s. His research has been published in many journals including Organizational Behaviour and Human Decision Processes, the Journal of Organisational Behaviour and the Journal of Vocational Behaviour.
Dr Arvey was awarded the Human Resource and Industrial Relations Land Grant Chair in 1998 and the Career Achievement Award from the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management in 2006. In 2011, he was presented the `Distinguished Scientific Contributions` award by the Society of Industrial and Organisational Psychology. He has also served on the editorial boards of several professional journals.
In addition to his scholarly academic work, he provided consulting services to NASA at the Johnson Space Centre to devise a system for selecting astronauts for long duration space flight missions. He has also consulted with Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota to help with group dynamics and organisational structure issues.
Dr Arvey completed his Master of Science in Psychology at the University of Minnesota, where he also received his PhD in Industrial/Organisational Psychology.
